Summary:
The 3-11 devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2011 rendered destructive damage to the communication networks across a wide area of East Japan. The significance of promptly establishing disaster-resilient/disaster-relief networks has been reaffirmed in terms of the need to provide robust communication means to people in the affected areas, where the communication infrastructure is knocked out. In light of the increasing disasters around the globe, the theme of facilitating communication in emergency situations is of paramount importance. For setting out a course for solving this pressing issue, Japanese Government has initiated the National Project with a budget of more than 10 billion Yen starting from 2012 for constructing flexible and multiple networks by combining all technologies covering physical to application layers. This panel shares what Japan has experienced in the disaster, addresses the common challenge in disaster-resilient networks, and directs ways in utilizing the results across the world in the future.

Summary:
Around the world wireless broadband has established itself as the quiet achiever and with the arrival of smartphones and tablets the technology is receiving a further boost as a bridge between the users in their homes, offices and cafes and the fixed and mobile broadband networks. It also offers a faster, and in some cases cheaper, alternative to the traditional mobile networks for accessing mobile broadband services. A range of specialised technologies are emerging - such near field communication (NFC), augmentation, internet of things (IoT) and machine-to-machine communication (M2M). Furthermore, wireless broadband is also well-suited for the delivery of mainstream broadband to regional communities. Mobile and wireless broadband will also be the infrastructure that will link the next billion people to the connected world. We are still at the start of this quiet revolution and the future will most certainly lead to further innovations and new opportunities. With artificial intelligence becoming more mainstream a range of new technologies will be developed, such as wearable devices and even internal devices used in e-health. Linked to increased broadband capacity, massive data processing and real-time analytics, this will see wireless broadband taking a leading role in the development of smart buildings, smart cities, and indeed smart societies.

Summary:
M to M sensor networks are emerging and many applications of wide area sensor networks are under development/considerations, including (but not limited to): Public infrastructure (Power transmission/distributions, Building/bridge monitoring, Water distributions, Gas distributions, Bridge monitoring, and so on), Agriculture (plant factory- huge potential), Fishery, Anti-disaster networks (the same system by switching to anti-disaster networks just in the case, and so on). To meet these trends/needs, IEEE Standardization has been working on many sensor networks ranging from smart meter leading to low rate and long range transmission. One of the successful formers is IEEE802.15.4g (SUN: Smart Utility Networks) and the latter is IEEE802.15.4k (Low Energy Critical Infrastructure Monitoring) that is under development. It is first time for sensor networks to get serious deployment and it is very time to consider what will be the potential obstacles and how we can overcome them for global deployment. The potential issues may include: how accommodate more sensor terminals over limited spectrum, how we can establish wide area networks, and how low power sensor networks can be established and so on. This leads to the necessity of the discussion on PHY, MAC, Network architecture and many other related technologies by getting the leading people at one place, PIMRC2012.
